    Doors & Windows

Changing the doors and windows in your home can bring you more comfort, energy savings and greater security. So much progress has been made in glazing and frames that you can cut heat loss by up to 40% and reduce your energy bills by 30%. These renovations do require a large investment, but tax credits, loans and special subsidies are there to help defray costs. Window orientation, house style and climate are only some of the factors that will dictate the choice of materials, glazing and window types.

Frames are available in wood, PVC and aluminium, and each material has its advantages and drawbacks. Wood has good thermal performance but needs more care than plastic. PVC is rot-proof, resistant and cheap, which translates to low-maintenance windows. Meanwhile, aluminium, which is thin and available in a range of colours, blends in well with modern buildings. Its mechanical properties make it the material of choice for large openings such as  bay windows. Unlike the other two, aluminium window frames are nearly always made to measure. Composite frames combine the advantages of two different materials.

The materials are available in all forms. House opening styles depend not only on aesthetic and practical reasons, but cultural ones as well. Windows open differently in different countries. In France, casement windows with 2 panels are the most common type. They usually open inward, unlike English-style casement windows that open outward. Tilting windows are called hopper windows, awning windows or double-hung windows depending on their axis they are common in Italy, Canada and Australia, respectively.

Tilt'n turn windows are often found in kitchens and bedrooms, because they let in air through the top while remaining secure.Sliding or sash windows are appreciated because they do not encroach on the interior. This system is often seen in French windows.

Window panes are the remaining basic criterion. Double glazing has been a must since the 1970s, and the superior acoustic and thermal insulation provided by double glazing is known to all. Thermal performance is given as the Uw coefficient, expressed in W/m².k. For the greatest gains, the coefficient should be as low as possible, below 1.4 W / m².k. To increase security and privacy, windows at ground level can be equipped with films and grills.

Shutters do not need to be changed at the same time. Even rolling shutters can be adder later. Panelswing shutter, slidding... whatever the style, shutters remain an efficient way of keeping out the heat and the cold. These essential architectural features give houses their feel, much like the entrance door. For home renovations, antique doors can be found easily in flea markets and jumble sales, while period door handles are readily available. Balconies and marqees can be added to the facade. Iron Craftsmen create designs that are faithful to classic models, and which lend a touch of elegance and style to your home.
