    Children&rsquos corner

Children&rsquos bedrooms are providing a new outlet for the decorative talents of parents.   Older than in the past and with greater buying power, they want to spoil their children and most of all, enjoy themselves !

The nursery look is a thing of the past.  Bedrooms for 11 to 14 year olds are now part of the overall decoration scheme. Traditional pinks and blues have been replaced with more subtle tones of grey, mauve and lichen green. No more teddy bear borders. Stickers designed by trendy graphic artists now decorate the walls.

Specialised websites and showrooms are popping up all over the place as a result. Their up-to-date  selection of furniture, bed linen, lighting and decoration for children is a runaway success. This fast-growing market is still young. It appeared about 5 years ago, just after the boom in children&rsquos fashion. The Scandinavian countries and France are the main leaders.

Furniture makers have followed suit making miniature versions of designer seats and developing special collections for children. Philippe Starck's cult armchair Louis Ghost now has a little brother called Loulou Ghost. And parents just love those mini Panton Chairs and Bertoia and Arne Jacobsen vintage chairs.  But what about the kids?

According to Matalie Crasset, &ldquoHomothety is not the solution because children don't want a chair that's set in a timewarp (...). They should be given open-ended objects so that they can make them a part of their imaginary world and turn their furniture into something different every day.&rdquo

Charles Eames is one of the first designers to have given serious thought to the question. His chair, table and stool set made of moulded plywood designed in 1945 has childlike curves. His famous Plywood Elephant, still made today, is a wonderful addition to any child&rsquos bedroom.

As fitting heirs, today&rsquos designers such as Matali Crasset enjoy getting back into a child&rsquos skin. They have invented furniture especially adapted to the 11 to 14 age group, half-toy, half-real that includes bunk beds, captain&rsquos beds and racing circuit rugs.

Aware of the importance of sustainable development, designers are coming up with furniture that grows with the child.

Kazam 01, the desk designed by Mahmoud Akram, can be used from tot to teens thanks to its three different heights. A real greenie, he uses PEFC-certified wood from Normandy.

An all-time best-seller, Stokke Sleepi&rsquos convertible crib has received many awards for its ingenuity. It&rsquos starts as a mini Cradle for the new-born and gradually turns into a baby&rsquos bed. With the junior kit, it becomes a 120 cm bed that can be used up to the age of  about 10 or be converted into an armchair.

Maartje Steenkamp&rsquos high chair is just as brilliant. Its legs can be gradually cut down as the child grows!

And all those clever space-saving ideas are also very popular. No safety problems with nursery tables that are fixed to the wall and leave floor space free. Highly practical, they also provide storage for bath and washing products. Two-in-one nursery tables that include slide-out baths are a wonderful idea as well.

Designer, inventive and playful, children&rsquos furniture could even make you want to be a child again!

"Habiter 2050" by Alain Bublex at Centre Pompidou in Paris from 24th October to 8th March 2010

Taking visitors forty years into the future, Alain Bublex&rsquos exhibition asks them how they perceive and transform the space of everyday life. The artist has turned the Children&rsquos Gallery, newly installed on the Mezzanine, into a mysterious landscape, a place outside the spatio-temporal framework we are used to. On screen, web robots display an ever-changing succession of random images culled from the Internet on the basis of a number of search terms (house, future, living&hellip), putting into question the apparent stability of the way we live now.
Children and adults are invited to &ldquoinhabit&rdquo this terrain of collective exploration, or to gaze at it like the pedestrians recalled by the artist, who stop a while by a building site, &ldquowatching the world change.&rdquo

Javier Mariscal (Valencia, 1950) is, first and foremost, an image creator who develops his work using all kinds of supports and disciplines. Furniture design, painting, sculpture, illustrations, interior design, graphic design, landscaping, gardening and so on are all the object of his professional, vital activity. Mariscal expresses himself using a personal language that is complex in its intention and simple in its statements, innocent yet provocative, that he uses to innovate, risk and communicate. He enjoys provoking the eyes that look at his works and creating complicity with them.
He has recently done the interior design and graphics for the H&M store in Barcelona, the collection for the Uno Design contract, the 11th floor of Hotel Puerta América Madrid for the Hoteles Silken group, the graphic image of the 32nd edition of the America&rsquos Cup, the new brand image for Camper for Kids, the Bombay Sapphire Design exhibition on 20th century design objects, the sculptural pergola for Río Hortega Hospital in Valladolid and the visual identity for the British post-production company, Framestore.
Among other projects, he is currently working on a retrospective exhibition at the Design Museum of London which will take place in the spring, on the full-length cartoon Chico y Rita with Fernando Trueba, on three books about his artistic and design work and on pieces of furniture for Vondom, Uno Design and Magis.
He has collaborated with companies such as Memphis, Akaba, Bidasoa, BD Ediciones de Diseño, Moroso, Nani Marquina, Vorwerk, Equipaje, Alessi, Sangetsu, Magis, Cosmic, Amat3, Santa& Cole, Lalique and Phaidon.
