    Household linen

Household linen is trendy. The trousseau made to last a lifetime is a thing of the past. Linen is changed with the seasons, just like off-the-peg clothing.

Household linen and fashion clothes, both made of textiles, have a special connection. It is therefore not surprising that designers should go from one to the other. Rosita Missoni confesses that she has found new inspiration over the last ten years in the design of household linen. The geometrical and graphic prints that made her reputation are now to be found on Bathroom linen , cushions and bed linen. Sonia Rykiel&rsquos famous multicoloured stripes have also invaded the bedroom.

Pop motifs and flashy colours first appeared in the seventies. Up until then, household linen was sensible and discreet and sheets were either plain white or buff-coloured. After years of washing, natural colours veer from beige to white. It was only in the thirties that bed linen started to come in pastels and it was a long time before bright colours became the norm.

Today, a new trend has appeared alongside our brightly coloured bed linen sets with their spots, stripes and large floral patterns, namely vintage linen. Feminine sheets in powdery tones with openwork borders and delicate lace are back in. Time-worn linen and hemp is working its charm once again. Vintage linen found in antique shops is being relooked and dyed to match the currently popular taupe, grey and violet for tablecloths and curtains. Retro-style Kitchen linen is also fashionable while cushion covers are made of old tea towels.

But today&rsquos nostalgia is resolutely modern. The inner sanctum of the bedroom is losing its privacy and becoming part of the overall decoration scheme. Bedding no longer hides under a carefully tucked in puritanical bedspread, but shows off its finest bed linen sets. The layered look is all the rage. Square and rectangular cushions of every shape and size are thrown with studied care over coverlets, throwovers and matelasse bedspreads juxtaposed in every direction to create a cosy but sophisticated look.

Another revolution is the adoption of the Scandinavian duvet by the rest of the world. Since 1960, duvet covers and duvets have gradually eclipsed the traditional duo of top sheet and blanket even if, in some countries, the duvet is used as an eiderdown with a top sheet as well as a Duvet cover

Increasingly comfortable and high-tech, duvets (from the French for &ldquodown&rdquo) guarantee a snug and cosy night's sleep. There are two sorts: synthetic and natural. Natural duvets are filled with a mixture of down and feathers. Longevity, comfort and thermal insulation are their main qualities. Duvets made of synthetic fibres are hypoallergenic, easy to look after and less expensive. Pillows are available in all sorts of ingenious forms for greater comfort.  Latex shape-memory profiled pillows have become very popular. They adapt to the shape of the head and provide relief for the cervical vertebrae.

&ldquoYou&rsquove made your bed. Now you must lie in it", as the saying goes. So let us cover our bed with the finest linen and spend one-third of our lives in a soft and slumberous dream.

&ldquoDans les armoires de nos grands-mères&rdquo, by Inès Heugel and Christian Sarramon, Editions du Chêne, 2009, 184 p.

Our grandmothers&rsquo linen presses were full of beautifully embroidered linen sheets, monogrammed pillow slips, openwork tablecloths, damask napkins, raw hemp and linen tea towels, baby&rsquos bonnets, Christening robes and cradle sheets  - everything, in fact, that was in her wedding trousseau!  The author, Inès Heugel, helps us to discover different materials (linen, cotton, silk, hemp, cotton and linen mixes, quilting) and techniques (open thread work, cutwork, ribbon applications, damask, Provençal matelasse, scalloping).  She talks to us lovingly about the fine linen whose properties are now being rediscovered, how to present it and how to look after it. These natural materials, which it is difficult to match today, such as embroidered linen sheets, so cool in the summer, and rustic hand-woven hemp tablecloths, are also full of memoires and emotions whose charm is captured perfectly by Christian Sarramon&rsquos photographs.
