    Helsinki Design Week / 6 to 16 september 2012.

It is an annual city festival for design in all the ways that design appears in our lives. Events happen all across the city and can be about traditional or industrial design, fashion, communication or even music. Lately, the festival has been expanding as its international network grows and as more and more individuals and companies suggest and plan events.

This year the main events of Helsinki Design Week will be held in the Old Customs Warehouse in Katajanokka. Join us for galas, workshops, exhibitions, fashion shows, seminars, visits to studios and closed-for-public spaces as well as shopping.  Helsinki Design Week is a part of the World Design Capital 2012 programme.

Portraits of the new architecture by Paul Goldberger. Ed Assouline. 216p. 2012.

Through the brilliant photography of Richard Schulman and an insightful introduction by The New Yorker critic Paul Goldberger, Portraits of the New Architecture celebrates the 50 personalities who have reinvented architecture in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. From Philip Johnson and I. M. Pei to Richard Meier and Daniel Libeskind, Portraits presents the magnetism of the architects themselves with images and design plans of their best work, and explores the architect-as-superstar phenomenon.

    Design House Stockholm

With the aim of enhancing everyday life, Design House Stockholm has been changing the way people think about their living and working space for many years. The secret to their success is that they work with an extensive network of more than 60 independent designers, in the same way publishing houses work with authors. They collaborate with both new, up-and-coming talent and established names. Although the majority of their designers are from Scandinavia,  they work with designers from all over the world in order to find that special Scandinavian touch.

Unlike many other companies, they don&rsquot try to force the fresh and free designs into a fixed production apparatus. Instead they use their extensive networks to find the right kind of production facilities, at the same time as exploring new production methods. All this transforms ideas into real products. Their collection of  functional and aesthetically refined design products of timeless appeal ranges from tableware and lighting to furniture and textiles.
