Robert Welch

Robert Welch's first studio opened in 1955. From the outset, Robert Welch was passionate about designing products that were highly functional, affordable and timelessly beautiful. He demonstrated this in his first major success, pioneering the introduction of stainless steel cutlery in the UK. He gradually built up a reputation for excellence in design and manufacture, earning a steady stream of orders, both commercial and private, from celebrities and members of the Royal Family. In the decades since, he has been joined by designers, prototypists and craftsmen. This small but loyal team is responsible for many iconic designs that are still loved today. This success enabled Robert Welch to expand his business to the entire top floor of the factory and open a workshop around the corner. In the early 1990s, Robert Welch invited his daughter Alice and son Rupert to join his small team and help him take the business forward. Growing up in a world of design and creativity proved to be an invaluable experience and, after Robert's death in 2000, Alice and Rupert became their father's natural successors, leading the future direction of the business.
