Our journey began in the 90s, when Maarten, our founder, was introduced to the fascinating art of bonsai by expert Ernst Mollet. This meeting, which seemed serendipitous, ignited in him a passion that continues to this day. What started as a simple hobby quickly turned into an all-consuming love for bonsai. Maarten was fortunate to spend a year in Japan, where he had the unique opportunity to study under renowned Japanese bonsai master Nobuichi Urushibata and other respected mentors. Their wisdom and guidance allowed him to discover the secrets of bonsai and deepen his understanding of its true essence. The real turning point came when Maarten returned from Japan, steeped in Japan's rich culture and a burning passion for high-quality Japanese bonsai. He realized that there must be many bonsai enthusiasts in Europe who shared his enthusiasm and appreciation for these outstanding living works of art. With this vision in mind, he embarked on a mission to bring the beauty of beautiful Japanese outdoor bonsai to Europe. And so, in 1997, Bonsai Plaza was born, a place where the magic of bonsai could blossom and be shared with others. At Bonsai Plaza, we strongly believe that bonsai is an art form that deserves to be cherished and celebrated.
