Description: Ammonites are an extinct family of fossil invertebrate cephalopod molluscs characteristic of the Mesozoic. Ammonites appeared in the Devonian or late Silurian, about 400 million years ago. They disappeared during the extinction of the Cretaceous, at the same time as the dinosaurs, about 65 million years ago. Their fossils are considered excellent chronological markers for geological times: they often allow to date the layer of rock in which they are found, if it formed under the sea. Their name is linked to the spiral shape of their fossilized shells that evoked for the ancient rams the horns.
