    Victor PETER (1840-1918).Gilt bronze and copper tazza on small pedestal decorated with a figure of Joan of Arc kneeling with open arms.Susse Frères production.Signed.Few abrasions and small stains, small pedestal slightly off axis, and minor dent along the coupe.Diameter: 23.5 cm (9-1/4 in.).Height: 8.5 cm (3-1/4 in.).Victor Peter began his career by working with Alexandre Falguière, before becoming the assistant of Antonin Mercié and Auguste Rodin.At the beginning of the 20th century, he was appointed professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.He specialized in animal subjects which he particularly appreciated, but he also produced medals and portraits.Many of his works can are now displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes.His large bronze groups include: Les Oursons (The Cubs) at Square Saint-Lambert, Paris, La Science en marche en dépit de l'Ignorance (Science Advancing Despite Ignorance) at the entrance of Palais de la Découverte, and the Génies symbolisant la musique (Genius Symbolizing Music) at the Hôtel de Ville, Paris, .He also worked in collaboration with Rodin, more particularly for the sculptures L'Hiver (Winter) and La Pensée (The Thinker), which are now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and for P. Doubois's Joan of Arc's horse.
