    Description

"The Woman with Cushions" Oil on canvas on display at Salon 1930 Signed 125 x 199 cm Gabriel Moiselet (Puy-en-Velay 1885- Paris 1961) Landscaper and painter decorator The Emeric HAHN Gallery presents an artist who, at first glance, does not fit into his specialty: Gabriel Moiselet. But the little that the artist's production has retained does not reflect the richness of his creation. His landscapes so present in the many exhibitions have obscured the richness of his creation. During this exhibition, the Emeric HAHN Gallery aims to present the many facets of the work of G. Moiselet landscape painter of course, but above all decorator, painter of figures... Gabriel-Marius-Adolphe Moiselet was born in Puy-en-Velay on November 5, 1885 (34 suburb of Saint-Jean) and died in Paris on February 10, 1961 (Hospital Broussais). The son of Hippolyte Moiselet and Marie-Rosa-Antonie Donnat, both lace makers, the painter's vocation must no doubt be related to his father's family. His grandfather, Louis Moiselet, was one of the architects of the city of Puy between 1825 and 1854, as well as a professor in the industrial art courses created by the Puy Academic Society. His paternal uncles, Henri and Alfred Moiselet, were architects and painters respectively. If the artist's father does not object to his son's will, it will be on the condition that his income be guaranteed by the professorship. Between 1900 and 1905, the young artist studied at the Municipal School of Fine Arts in the city of Puy, in the studio of the architect Proy. It was at the age of 20 that Moiselet achieved his first success by becoming the winner of the Crozatier Prize[1] on July 3, 1905, a three-year scholarship that allowed him to continue his studies in Paris. Between 1906 and 1914, the painter enrolled in the School of Fine Arts and attended the workshops of Jean-Paul Laurens, Luc-Olivier Merson and Raphael Collin. In his artistic studies Gabriel Moiselet achieved encouraging successes, notably in the competitions Sturler (two degree sketch), Rougevin (figure drawn after nature) and Jauvin d'Attainville (landscape). At the same time, he devoted himself to his teaching career. Between 1908 and 1910, he qualified as a drawing teacher in high schools and colleges and taught until retirement age in schools in the city of Paris. In 1930, he was appointed a teacher at Chaptal High School and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1936 as a member emeritus of national education and fine arts. Now free from material difficulties, Moiselet can devote himself fully to his art, which he will practice all his life. Landscape painter, ? his many views of the Velay have built his career and his fame?, Gabriel Moiselet is also a portraitist and above all a painter decorator, a more unknown aspect of his work. Between 1928 and 1959, he devoted himself to the decoration of religious buildings, such as the Chapel of St. Joseph of Verdun (1928) and Vaux-Devant-Damloup (1933), but also civil, as well as the festival hall of the city of Robinson (Paris suburb) on the themes of the History of Dance, then the History of the True Tree (Robinson Crusoe) in 1959. In 1931, Moiselet was represented at the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris with several decorative works performed for the Palais de l'Aéronautique (The Crossing of the North Atlantic), commissioned by Laurent-Eynac, Minister of Air, compatriot and friend of the artist, but also for the Palais de l'Education Nationale (The Activity in The Higher Schools of Young Girls) and the Olympic Committee. These decorations earned him the silver medal of the exhibition. In 1937, the painter created for the Pavilion of the Massif Central dioramas of the Velay as well as two decorative frescoes on the themes of Lace, adornment of the woman and the joy of living, awarded with the gold medal. Throughout his long career, Moiselet won numerous awards and honorary awards. Regularly exhibiting at the Salon des Artists Français from 1912, the painter won numerous medals, as well as the Rosa Bonheur Prize in 1933, the Bonnat Prize in 1944, the French Landscapers' Prize in 1947 and the Corot Prize in 1948. A member of the French Artists, he was placed out of competition in 1952. Despite an intense activity in Paris, Moiselet will not forget his native country and his compatriots and will organize an exhibition of his best works every year at Puy-en-Velay. A prolific and protean artist, treating the landscapes of Velay, Ile-de-France or Brittany as much talent as large decorative painting, portraiture and illustration, Gabriel Moiselet deserves his place alongside landscape artists such as Victor Charreton or decorative painters such as Jean Dupas. Depending on his subject and his support, the painter's colourful palette and touch adapted to express the harshness and harshness of his native country, but also his Virgilian accents and his sweetness of life. In his decorative works, moiselet, on the other hand, was more synthetic, adept of a classical, sober and measured drawing and a color aimed above all at harmonizing his compositions in their space. [1] Established by a bequest, the Crozatier Prize, named after its author Charles Crozatier, is awarded by competition to any student architect, sculptor or painter of the municipal school of Puy wishing to continue his studies in Paris. The prize consists of an allowance for three years of an annual pension amounting to 2,170 francs to which the city of Puy adds an annual interim allowance of 2,830 francs.
