    Description

Jan TILENS Antwerp, 1589 - 1630 Architectural Caprice, view of the Palatine in Rome Oil on panel 75 x 125 cm Signed at bottom left: J. TILENS. VI and dated indiscriminately. Provenance: W. Sabin Gallery, London. Douwes Gallery, Amsterdam, 1961. F. C. Butot, Sanct Gilden. Private collection, Great Britain. Jan Tilens is a contemporary of Willem van Nieulandt (Anvers 1584-1635). Our painting is interesting because it clearly attests that the painter had to stay in Rome. Other works by van Nieulandt also contain a number of Italianizing elements, and the large Landscape with Diane and his Nymphs, preserved in Berlin, shows the influence that Paul Bril's work had on van Nieulandt. Apart from artists such as Rubens and Van Dyck, many other Flemish painters were attracted to Rome in the early 17th century, and were impressed by the sight of the great Roman monuments. The phrase "Roma quanta flees ipsa ruina docet," "the ruins prove that Rome was great," is included in a drawing by Maarten van Heemskerk, which depicts the Palatin (Berlin, cabinet of drawings). Flemish painters were the first to depict the ruins, and thus began a tradition that, more than a century later, had developed widely in the work of Gaspar van Wittel and Hendrick van Lint. Early representations of the ruins, such as those of Willem van Nieulandt, were often not entirely topographical, but instead give an interesting interpretation of the scale of the ruins in relation to the characters rendered on a smaller scale. The artist represented himself at the centre of the composition, with the end of Circus Maximus, rendered here with the ruins and probably observed from the Forum, called at that time the "Campo Vaccino", or "cow grazing". Many visitors felt the same astonishment at the ruins of Rome. For example, Poggio Bracciolini expresses his nostalgia for the greatness of the past: "The Romanum Forum is the most famous square in the city, it is where the Romans met and the laws were dictated, and nearby is the Committee, where the magistrates were elected." The columns on the right side of the painting delineate the space of the Tilens landscape, and are based on the columns erected from the Vespasian Temple on the Forum. In Flanders, Tilens often collaborated with other artists such as Hendrik van Balen, who added characters to the representations of landscapes. But the most important works of Tilens are those devoted to landscapes, such as our painting and the Italian Hills with the Flight to Egypt, bequeathed by the late R. H. Wilenski to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. No. 1785, panel, 62 x 94 cm, signed and dated in 1610).
