A FINE GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW, SAXON, circa 1730 Formed of a sturdy steel bow struck with a maker?s mark in the form of a bunch of grapes and the quality-control mark of Nuremberg, and retaining its original string and cord bindings, and a walnut tiller pierced with setting apertures and fitted with a bolt-clip and rear sight. Veneered on its upper surface and the rear of its cheek-butt with panels of staghorn engraved with scrolling foliage and flowerheads, inlaid at its sides with engraved plaques cut in the form of dragons and a large, crowned, double headed eagle bisected by the upper surface, each giving issue to scrolling foliage and tendrils involving birds? heads and grotesque masks, and fitted with a fluted iron release-mechanism, iron lugs for a cranequin, a small iron stirrup, an iron lever trigger with cord binding, a set-trigger, and a swivel-safety.
