A FINE SPANISH MIQUELET-LOCK GUN, dated 1788 The two-stage barrel with gold touch-hole, long octagonal breech inlaid with gold poincons, comprising fleur-de-lys and makers stamps ANT.GUSASOLA and silver inlaid decoration comprising running dogs, stag, boar and rabbits amidst roses and rocaille decoration. Deeply chiselled with floral decoration on a gilt ground at the mid point with swelling muzzle with silver inlaid fore-sight. The bottom of the barrel with the inscription of "MRO ESAM P S M PLAS GURP 1788." Finely engraved breech-tang with fruitwood stock of Catalan form The superb miquelet lock with finely engraved plate inlaid with gold stamp with the maker?s name etc etc The steel chiselled with grotesque mask with overall engraved rocaille decoration. Steel mounts including engraved butt-plate side-plate finely engraved with rocaille decoration surrounding a bird feeding it?s young. The trigger-guard engraved on the bow. The Arms engraved on the trigger-guard are those of King Louis XVI of France. This gun was presented by the King of Spain, Carlos IV to the King of France, Louis XVI, to mark Carlos IV's accession to the throne. Like his fellow monarchs Louis XVI was devoted to hunting and would have possessed a sizeable cabinet d?armes, to which this fine Spanish gun might have formed a late addition. Item ref: 1293
