A FINE PAIR OF VIENNESE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS, circa 1725 #975 With long blued two-stage barrels, each slightly flared at the muzzle, turned at the girdle with silver spider fore-sight, octagonal breeches each with two gold-lined maker?s marks of Pio Cominazzo (Nue Stockel 201, 202) and with four star-shaped punch marks above, brass-lined touch-holes and fitted with plain tangs. The flat bevelled locks each inscribed ?In Wienn? behind the cock, finely engraved with foliage and fitted with blued steel and faceted pan. The moulded figured walnut full stocks carved with foliated strapwork on the fore-ends and around the barrel tangs. With full cast and chased gilt-bronze mounts, comprising elaborate pierced foliate side-plates, escutcheons centered on a shield chased with a helmeted male profile bust, compressed spurred pommels each engraved with strapwork against a hatched ground with a trophy of arms on each side, shaped foliate pommel-caps against a stippled ground, trigger-guards and with engraved and faceted ramrod-pipes. Horn fore-end caps and horn-tipped ramrods. These pistols are reminiscent of the work of the Viennese gunmaker Anton Penzeneter. Item ref: 975
