Artist Biography: Isidore Verheyden was a Belgian painter of landscapes, still-lifes and remarkable portraits. He received his first artistic training from his father Jean-François Verheyden, afterwards he became a student at the Academy of Brussels under the tutorship of Joseph Quinaux from 1857 until 1868. He finished his studies in the free atelier of Jean-François Portaels. Verheyden resided in Hoeilaart from 1873 until 1883 and then he moved permanently to Brussels. He painted most of his landscapes in a Realist manner, but evolved around 1880, under the influence of the French Impressionists, towards a luminist Impressionism and also experimented for a short period with tachism. He foremost painted the rural area around Brussels and Antwerp. Verheyden was a co-founder of the artistic group "Les XX" from 1885 until 1888. He became both teacher and director at the Academy of Brussels from 1900 until 1905. He was a member of the Belgian Royal Academy.
