Artist Biography: Edmond De Schampheleer was a Belgian Realist painter of landscapes. He was a student of Eugène De Block in Antwerp and also a good friend of Edmond De Praetere. He resided in Barbizon and also a few years in Munich. De Schampheleer made numerous travels troughout Europe. The influence of the Barbizon School leads him toward plainairism. He worked alot in Gelderland, a similar place to Barbizon in Holland. Here he developed his view on landscapes, based on Dutch 17th century landscape depiction. Together with Charles De Groux, Félicien Rops an Camille Van Camp, he illustrated the "Contes Brabançons" and even "Les Légendes Flamandes" by Charles De Coster. In 1869, De Schampeleer became knight in the Order of King Leopold. He particpated at many collective exhibitions where he obtained golden medals at important salons such as in Munich in 1864, Brussels in 1866, Berlin in 1872 and also in Paris in 1877.
