He received his artistic training at the Academies of Antwerp and Brussels between 1893 and 1899. He completed his studies at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1900 until 1907. Navez exhibited his works with the artistic group "Le Sillon" in Brussels in 1908. He debuted in a Realist style that reflected upon the works of Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas, but evolved eventually from 1910 toward a rather synthetic style that was coherent with the Brabant Fauvists. From 1917 onward his works began to manifest under the influence of Paul Cézanne, due to its strong and constructive compositions. After 1923, Navez painted very colourful and constructive still lifes in which he used regularly his palette knife. A retrospective exhibition was held in Brussels in 1932.
