Artist Biography:
Jan Verhas was a Realist painter of portraits, historical- and genre scenes, landscapes and seascapes. He received his artistic training at the Academy of Dendermonde, as well as at the Academy of Antwerp. He is the younger brother of the renowned painter Frans Verhas. He was awarded the "Prix de Rome" in 1860. Verhas resided in Paris in 1860 and participated in numerous Salons. He travelled to Italy in 1862 to visit Venice and Padua. He lived in Binche from 1863 until 1867 and then moved Brussels. Verhas became active as a plein-airist from 1882 onward and became Dendermonde?s leading artist of the Naturalist style. He was the founder of the School of Dendermonde.
