Description

Pyramid clock in chiselled, patined and gilded bronze, with a bas-relief portraying Venus and Eros. An eagle and a sphere are perched on the crest. Fine ormolu decoration, such as friezes of palms, vases, canopies, foliage... Period: Louis XVI Clockmaker: Lepaute in Paris, signed on the dial, for Pierre-Basile Lepaute (1750-1843), clockmaker to the King, H.S.H the Duc de Bourbon and his Grace the Comte d'Artois, and then Clockmaker to the Emperor, and again clockmaker to the King under Louis XVIII and Charles X. Bibliography: A clock with similar ornamentation and the same bas-relief, signed by Thierry in Paris, is reproduced in "La pendule Française", 2nd part, Tardy, 1975, p.265, n°1. Height: 1ft10in.
