AN IMPORTANT ROMAN MARBLE LION HEAD FROM A STRIGILATED SARCOPHAGUS.

Circa third century A.D. Carved and drilled in deep relief, the head is turned to the left, the eyes sunken into their deep sockets, peering upwards to the left, the eyeballs with incised irises and deeply recessed lunate pupils, the open mouth with large twisted incisors, a large reeded ring looped through its mouth, the thick mane frames the face in tufts and curls extending down the right side of the head as it emerges from the sarcophagus, with remnants of the deeply cut strigilation visible in the background. This head probably belongs to a group of sarcophagi carved in Rome and Ostia during the third century A.D., possibly during the reign of Diocletian. Diameter: 18.5 / 47 cm. Height: 23 / 58 cm.
