Description

Two panels from the famous French scenic panoramique « Les Rives du Bosphore » : designed and printed by the finest early 19th century manufacture of Dufour, dated before 1812. The panels are composed of joined sheets of paper, wood-block printed by hand. Such a scenic required over 2000 wood-blocks to achieve the infinite details of the design and the richness of colors : a technique used until the 1830's, thus an art form lost and impossible to duplicate presently. Such panels are rare today, as few were printed at the time, and not many have survived. These papers were cleaned by a conservator/specialist from the Louvre and have regained their original palette and freshness of colors, yet showing the patina of time which gives them their antique quality and charm. The panels have been relined on linen canvas to give them support and guarantee a lasting stable condition, and mounted on 2 stretchers measuring each : Height 1,91 m x Width 2,25 m (6'3' x 7'4') The 2 panels can be hung side by side presenting the scenic in continuity, or separately as 2 tableaux (see the effect of the 2 options in the attached images). The ?Rives du Bosphore? scenic panoramique is published in several books specialized on the subject (such as Clouzot, McClelland, and particularly Nouvel-Kammerer's ?French Scenic Wallpaper 1795-1865? published by the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris).
