From the Latin cathedra, 'seat with a back but no arms'. Formerly the chair was derived from the throne, a piece of furniture responsible for religious significances. It spread into common usage during the Egyptian Empire reign. The Greeks had a kind of seat, called a Klimos, which was characterized by a low back. The chair, which practically disappeared during the Dark Ages, reappeared during the Renaissance, but only for the upper classes of society.
