... of a helix or a solid screw. This difference is noticeable since the two shapes, one with a solid center resembling a screw and the other resembling the shape of a pig tail known as a hollow helix, cannot be used in the same way. So to speak, the helix-shaped wick proves to be much more useful when your stopper is in poor condition or fragile.
Once your worm in the cork, the extraction of the latter can be done by force of traction or lever in addition to the case of the electric corkscrew which, by the magic of electricity, removes the cork without effort.

But to understand the different categories of bottle openers, it is necessary to linger on a short but fascinating history of the corkscrew.

    History

Like many creations in history, the corkscrew comes from a necessity. The wine used to be transported in barrels, as the marketing of bottled wine was forbidden. Fraud was the main reason for this prohibition because the capacity of the decanters manufactured artisanally did not make it possible to certify the gauge as one said at that time. However, the container gradually changed in the second half of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century to be bottled in glass, a bottle called at that time "stems and globes" or "bulbs" because of the shape of the body and the neck. This change took place because it was realized that wine stored in hermetically sealed bottles not only had a longer shelf life but also a characteristic bouquet, acquired through the maturation process. It was also realized that a bottle closed with the cork could also be stored lying down, which kept the cork moist and made it more efficient.

It was the English, great wine lovers and the first wine exporter in the world at that time, who were the first to market wine bottled and closed with a cork stopper, thanks to the development of the glass industry. It is of this innovation that the corkscrew appears in England in order to facilitate the extraction of the stopper by the consumers. Thus, the first bottle opener was born and it is interesting to know that it was at the beginning only the adaptation of the "corkscrew", a tool to deburr guns and firearms.

The golden age of the corkscrew was around the middle of the 19th century, the heyday of British industry and inventions. In those days, visionaries competed to register their patents for all kinds of inventions, including the corkscrew. The first patent was granted to Samuel Henshall in 1795. From then until the beginning of the 20th century, more than 300 patents for corkscrews were registered, which underlines their progression. It is these corkscrews that collectors from all over the world, lovers of antique corkscrews, possess. Due to the more and more common use of the corkscrew, new materials were introduced in its realization. Manufacturers used more expensive metals, including gold, bronze and silver. The use of materials such as bone, ivory, enamel and other forms of decoration was also encouraged.

Even though the first corkscrews were very simple (a big worm attached to a handle) today the shapes and models are multiple but the world of wine lovers has its classics.
